California Palm – Washingtonia Filifera

Description: It is a monoecious species that belongs to the family of palms (Palmaceae). It can reach 20m in height. The trunk is thick, thickening more at the base and has fine cracks along its length. The leaves are large and palmate, up to 1.5m long, with a petiole of more than one meter with the edge armed with large thorns. The leaves are covered with long, cottony filaments and are crowded under the canopy as they dry. The flower clusters are born among the leaves in spring and can reach several meters in length. The flowers are small, whitish. The fruit is about 5mm long and almost black.
