Description: Dark green foliage plant with spiny, toothed leaves. Its scientific name describes the appearance of the plant, spinulosum refers to its spiny leaflet. The female strobilus of Dioon spinulosum is the longest strobilus of the gymnosperms, reaching 50-80 cm in length and 20-30 cm in width and 15 kg in weight. Each side of the female strobilus has two seeds, hence the genus name means “two eggs”. Recently, they have been found in some cycads to contain carcinogens and neurotoxins that may have long-term harmful effects.
