Carob tree – Ceratonia Siliqua

Description: It is an evergreen tree, with a rounded crown, very irregular, between 5 and 10 m high and with a crown width of between 6 and 10 m. Its trunk is tortuous and its bark is smooth, reddish brown. The leaves are compound, bipinnate and measure between 10 and 30 cm, and the leaflets, which measure 2 to 7 cm, are shiny dark green on the front and medium dull green on the back. It flowers between August and October, with flowers of about 2 mm, not showy, yellow or reddish, arranged in clusters of up to 5 cm. Its fruits, the carob beans, are edible, leathery legumes, between 5 and 25 cm long and blackish violet when ripe.
